Engineering Manager

I created a new team to make it easier to securely build on Cloudflare’s network based on a secure container technology we created to support Remote Browsers. This technology enabled Cloudflare to support new clients. Today, this team enables Cloudflare to partner with Apple to bring their Private Relay technology to more markets, Amazon to provide low-latency speed tests to its Eero router users, and Hugging Face to provide low latency inference to millions of AI applications.By 2024 the team was quite self-sustaining and on a good growth track, so I decided to step away to pursue new things.

Jan 2020 - Jan 2024

Technical Lead

San Francisco, California, Us

Joining Cloudflare with the S2 Systems acquisition, I was the technical lead responsible for converting our proprietary Remote Browser tech from AWS to Cloudflare’s native edge network. I directed the invention of entirely new systems to support Unicast-addressing and secure containers on our custom metals. Rather than docker, we manually provisioned Google’s gVisor (secure container). I laid the groundwork for rearchitecting our server-side infrastructure from NodeJS to Golang. We completed these architecture conversions in under a year, entering beta in October.

Jan 2020 - Jan 2021

Senior Software Engineer

S2 Systems Corporation

In late 2018, I was invited to join a group of Microsoft vets in the early days of their startup to create a cloud-based browser. One of three developers, we created patented and performance-optimized systems to run part of Chromium’s rendering library in WASM on an HTML and TypeScript client and connected to a copy in an AWS container via HTTP, creating a remote browser.Early on, while I did a bit of everything, my expertise was in reducing response latency using advanced web and Linux performance analysis tools, which was key to our transparency principles. As the company grew, I transitioned to the services/cloud leader. I created the EC2 environment, including the CD and monitoring/alerting infrastructure, the team runbooks and training material for how to use, test, and understand these environments. I had just begun migrating to Kubernetes/EKS when we were acquired by Cloudflare, Inc in late 2019.

Oct 2018 - Jan 2020

Senior Software Engineer

Redmond, Washington, Us

During the beta of Windows Mixed Reality, I continued to support my SteamVR product. I acquired advanced debugging techniques, leveraging tracing and debugging software like Windows Performance Analyzer and GPUView as well as more traditional resources such as native debuggers, instrumentation and stack sampling with narrow performance targets required for smooth VR, where every microsecond counts.Just before leaving to join S2 Systems, I worked on a related research team using computer graphics and expert artists to synthesize AI training data. I decreased the time it took their visual artists to export their models from 45 minutes to less than one.

Sep 2017 - Oct 2018

Software Engineer I & Ii

Redmond, Washington, Us

Within a year at Microsoft, I was recognized for my skill as a developer and joined the Internet Explorer team as a developer for the core HTTP and HTML C++ libraries used by Windows and Internet Explorer (wininet.dll, urlmon.dll, mshtml.dll). I worked on important zero-days and proactive security patches in these components.Looking for more creative development, I joined Microsoft’s Surface Hub team. We worked in a fork of Windows, and I developed the end-user and enterprise settings controls, including bootloader and related kernel settings, including higher level applications which enabled IT organizations to configure and debug the devices both remotely (e.g. Intune) and locally (settings app).In 2016, I was tapped to begin early experiments on a new product; I was perhaps the first developer in Microsoft to get our HoloLens software running in VR. I would go on to work with Valve Software developers directly in their Bellevue office to bring their catalog of hundreds of VR launch titles to Windows Mixed Reality. I worked with the Windows Core Shell and Application Security teams to securely translate visual and tracking data between the new Windows Runtime and older Windows API layers, as well as modify the Hololens shell to support this new medium. For my work on SteamVR, I was promoted to Senior Software Engineer awarded a special bonus.

Sep 2014 - Sep 2017

Software Development Engineer In Test

Redmond, Washington, Us

My entry position was as a Test engineer writing automated tests in .NET and analyzing results for Windows Update and Windows Store, which were large C++ components of Windows, to find issues. I usually found time to suggest fixes.
