About Benjamin Brooks

Hi, I'm Ben Brooks, and I'm a graduate of the University of Southampton (UK), and the University of Leicester (UK). Whilst reading my MSci in Geology at Southampton, I was heavily involved in Southampton University Students' Union (SUSU) as a union councillor and student president of the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences between 2009 and 2010 representing over 800 Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. I went on to become the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Maths Representative between 2010 and 2011, looking out for the interests of some 6000 students within the faculty. I also sat on the University's Military Education Committee and was involved in the Curriculum Innovation Programme. After graduating, while working as a museum curatorial professional and geologist, I studied with the University of Leicester to gain my MA in Museum Studies, with a focus on geological curation and a dissertation focus on the thorny issue of fossil collection and exploitation in the UK.I've since moved out of the severely underfunded museums sector and into meteorology, becoming an operational meteorologist (weather forecaster to you and me) in 2014 and focusing on meteorology and civil aviation.Outside of university, I've been involved with the Natural History Museum (London) as a curatorial volunteer with the Palaeontology Department when they still allowed volunteers to work behind the scenes in a curatorial role. I'm training towards my Private Pilots License and I've also become a Flying Officer with the RAF Air Cadets, primarily teaching aviation related theory to budding aviation enthusiasts.Specialties: Sedimentology, Structural Geology, Remote Sensing and GIS, Palaeontology, Geological Mapping and Research, Writing and Blogging, Informal Education and Mentoring, Web Video Production, Higher Education student-staff interaction, Web Design (HTML/CSS/Wordpress),
