I specialise in the agri-food sector, focusing on improving food supply chains. I have worked with multinationals, SMEs, farmers, universities, NGOs and governments in the UK, Australasia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Canada and the Caribbean, to identify sustainable, market-oriented solutions which transcend firms, departments and disciplines. I have designed and delivered value chain development projects and training courses across Africa and in Sri Lanka. My recent Value Chain Analysis manual is available free: https://www.cabi.org/bookshop/book/9781789249361/I am on the board and advisory roles with three not-for-profit organisations, with a particular focus on sustainable land use and communities, and corporate governance. Previous to this, my early career was in the UK government, and with subsequent advisory work in Australia and the Caribbean, I bring insights into food, agriculture and environment policies, including using these in training in creating policy frameworks in developing countries which support inclusive agri-food sector growth. With particular strengths in systemic thinking, creativity, empathy and integrity, I am looking for opportunities where I can apply my global experience and technical expertise, especially in areas that lead to tangible societal and environmental impacts. My consultancy and research projects have included:- Co-designed and leading delivery of the annual Australia Award Africa Value Chain Training Course which has built capacity in value chain approaches amongst over 100 participants from 19 different countries. Based on their feedback and impact, the course was recommissioned by the Australian Government after the initial 3-year contract.- Ensured a market-orientated, whole-of-chain perspective in development projects in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. In total, these projects trained over 480 young farmers in business and production skills so they could target high value, dynamic markets.- Advising Yalumba, Australia’s 7th largest wine company, on how to prioritise its carbon reduction investments, and leverage this to improve its competitiveness in the UK market- Developing a new carbon reduction framework for Zespri International, which manages 30% of the global trade in kiwifruit- Recommending improvements across Simplot Australia’s processed vegetable supply chain, which contributed to its decision to retain its Tasmanian processing operations- Proposing how the British Columbia Pork Association and the Ontario sheep industry could transition its members from volume to value strategies
