Speaker: Aws User Group - Custom Runtimes In Aws Lambda
    Theodo Uk Sep 2019 - Sep 2019
    London, England, Gb
When people think serverless they often associate it with Python and Javascript. The native support for languages on services like AWS Lambda has grown, but more excitingly innovative additions to serverless offerings like AWS Lambda Layers had allowed any language runtime to be used for a serverless service.Recently I’ve architected the rebuild of a 10-year legacy system with a team unwilling to move from PHP. The main pains of the old system were the complex environment management, high AWS cost and lack of application code testing (that is a whole talk in itself!). To eliminate the complex operational complexity and AWS cost, a serverless architecture was been used (on AWS), using Lambda Layers to provide efficient performance of a PHP runtime. In this talk, I will discuss the benefits and challenges of custom runtimes in the context of AWS lambda and how traditional PHP developers found the transition to serverless. In addition to the runtime elements, I will discuss the architectural decisions of the project, ranging across endpoint granularity, error logging, testing, code sharing and deployment.

React and React-Native allow a learn once write anywhere paradigm. This is great, because one tech team can build both your web app and native mobile experience. The problem is developers hate writing things twice. There have been a couple of efforts to build a unifying technology to write an application once and have it work on both web and native. Yet this is not always the best approach. There is value in only sharing your business and state logic; keeping your render code separate. In this talk I will give real examples from my work with MADE.COM, migrating their web and mobile application to React and React-Native with code sharing as a primary objective.

Building a Trump/Obama Tweet Classifier with 98% accuracy in 1 hour!Live Demo Here: https://benellerby.github.io/trump-obama-tweet-classifier/When it comes to Machine Learning it can be hard to find small scale real world applications that deliver good results. To find such an application I challenged myself to build a Naive Bayesian tweet classifier. Classifying the author of any given tweet as President Obama or President Trump respectively, resulting in 98% accuracy! This talk will go through scraping the data, building the classifier (without 'recoding the wheel') and showing how the model was verified.https://www.meetup.com/London-Artificial-Intelligence-Deep-Learning/events/245251725/

  • Colaw
    Office Administrator
    Colaw Jun 2013 - Sep 2013
    Loughborough, Leicestershire, Gb
During my summer vacation period before my first year at university I worked part time within CoLaw, a Leicestershire based Health and Safety and Employment Law firm. This work involved team work, organising events and ensuring client requests were fulfilled. Not only did I develop my skills as a worker in general, but I also gained an insight into the world of commerce, developing my commercial awareness and understanding of modern consultancy. The varied nature of the work required me to adapt quickly and be flexible to changing circumstances. Towards the end of my time with the firm I began representing it at several networking meetings, developing further my interpersonal skills. Also running the company’s blog, social media and Google Adwords accounts allowed me to develop my SEO and marketing experience.
