Our aim is to develop a machine learning pipeline to automatically detect oil well symbols on these intricate maps and convert their positions into real-world coordinates. By cross-referencing our detected coordinates with those in the U.S. database, we seek to uncover undocumented oil wells, improving national resource management and tracking.• Trained YOLO_v5 computer vision models to detect oil well symbols on complex geographical maps, improving the F1-Score from 75% to 98%.• Curated and annotated 6,000+ data points using LabelMe, and developed a program to automatically generate training and testing datasets for the model.• Built and optimized machine learning pipelines to automate the identification of oil wells, discovering 300+ potentially undocumented wells.• Leveraged LLNL’s high-performance computing platforms (Borax, Ruby, Pascal) to efficiently compute and scale machine learning models for large datasets. Although education is free in Vietnam, additional fees such as transportation, school supplies, and uniforms make it impossible for impoverished communities to pursue higher schooling. This in turn creates a cycle of continuous poverty, making them much more susceptible to human trafficking as there are no stable sources of income.
