Polymer Manufacturing Engineer

Detroit, Michigan, Us

General Motors both contracts Tier suppliers to produce plastic parts as well as produces them in-house. To enable a higher level of part quality, I helped to develop robust injection molding processes for various interior vehicle door parts. I also responded to urgent issues on other programs as they arose to improve quality and decrease scrap. Lessons learned from these 'rapid responses' as well as through DFSS projects enabled new design standards to be developed as part of General Motors' perpetual kaizen journey.

Mechanical Technician

Millworks Hot Rod/ Ball Technical

As a unique opportunity to blend my two passions, I was fortunate to spend time working with Millworks Hot Rod and Ball Technical. Millworks Hot Rod builds and repairs pre-63 hot rods, while Ball Technical operates out of the same area and builds engineered systems for a variety of customers. While working on the vehicle side of the business, I learned a variety of fabrication techniques such as MIG welding, plasma cutting, and grinding/ sanding. For Ball Technical I fabricated a variety of systems with high-pressure Swagelok fittings to print, in addition to trade show displays. While both sides of the business focused me around build execution, I was also able to develop practical design principles for to satisfy requirements where design wasn't defined.

Nov 2016 - Dec 2017

Machinist

Brooks Precision Machining

To grow my applicable-engineering skills, I worked at Brooks Precision Machine for the summer between Sophomore and Junior year of college. As a part of this experience, I operated automatic Haas machines as well as conventional Bridgeport mills. Brooks made a name for his company by their expertise in machining Kovar; a tough material with the same thermal coefficient of expansion as glass. Therefore, the material is great for space applications (satellites). Thru learning how different materials require different setups and how production runs are validated, I gained foundational knowledge that helps to make me a well-rounded practical engineer.

May 2016 - Aug 2016

Lean Co-Op

Cleveland, Ohio, Us

As my introduction to the professional world of manufacturing, I worked with Parker Aerospace to strategically define and develop business strategy to reduce costs and TAKT. As a Co-Op employee, I learned about the gerotor pump manufacture/ maintenance process and how aerospace manufacturing standards/ processes help to keep high quality and safety. One of the many concepts that I took away from this role was that retraining is never the sole answer for a problem. With this concept understood, it is critical that manufacturing processes are well defined and well designed to eliminate sources of error regardless of training.
