Doctoral Candidate

PHD title: Understanding the dynamics of change in historic landscapes. My research is focused on developing a theoretically informed (e.g. phenomenology, practice-theory and actor-network theory) approach to understand landscape change in England between c.1100 and c.1600, which foregrounds the role of human experience, spatial practice and the material world in shaping such change. As opposed to seeking explanations in the actions of powerful agents (kings, lords, bishops, etc.) or the pressures of social structures (lordship, technological change, etc.) or environmental determinants (soils, climate, etc.).My PhD is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council through the Northern Bridge consortium. Northern Bridge brings together Newcastle University, Durham University and Queen’s University Belfast and a number of Strategic Partners to provide fully-funded studentships to outstanding postgraduate researchers across the full range of Arts and Humanities subjects.
