You could summarize my work experience as a tumultuous self-exploration. It all started off in the safe confines of a prestigous accounting firm as a tax associate. Working there was a great experience and complemented my organizational skills and attention to detail. But the best thing about working there was that I realized that I wanted for my strong desire to help other people to be the main focus of my job, rather than something I volunteer my time to in my off time. So, I ran away and joined the circus.Ok, not the actual circus, but a program called AmeriCorps NCCC. There I traveled around the country with a team of volunteers building houses in New Orleans, responding to disastrous tornadoes in Alabama, running a Duck Derby fundraiser for a nature conservancy in Massachusetts, and being a Wildland Firefighter at a fire in Virginia.I picked up steam after this wild and wonderful experience and decided I wanted to try being a teacher in a 3rd world country. So I moved down to Peru, got a teaching certification (TEFL) in Cusco, and taught English for a year in Peru and Colombia. Then I moved to Costa Rica to pursue one of my biggest interests regarding 3rd world development: microfinance. A microfinancing institution called FUDECOSUR agreed to take me on as an intern where I designed and carried out interviews of rural small business owners (all in Spanish!) about what microfinancing services would be most helpful in their business operations.Phew! I learned a lot from those experiences. While I can shingle a roof as well as the next guy, one of the biggest takeaways was that I wanted to more fully utilize my technical mind. So now I'm thrilled to have found web development as a discipline because it plays off of my strengths as a thorough analytical thinker. And I'm excited to be able to help cause oriented organizations work towards their visions to make the world a better place through the use of technology.
