The Student Hunger Strike Force (SHSF) serves as a high school companion organization to the Food Project. In forming the SHSF, myself and the founder of the Food Project, John Javna, wanted to address the problem of sustainability in supplying food to food pantries. While the Food Project had found an effective method of getting food donors to reliable supply food every other month, donors would eventually fall off of the program and stop donating. Thus, we created the SHSF, which was designed to recruit high school students to canvass neighborhoods and sign up as many donors as they could within one hour. In our pilot year of 2016-17, we experience significant setbacks and failure to draw recruits to the program. After re-evaluating our approach, we streamlined the organization and I set out to gather a leadership team to help complete our goals in the 2017-18 school year. Our redesigned campaign was a resounding success. Our goal for the 2017-18 school year of signing up 150 new donors was greatly surpassed, and we ended the year with 200+ new donors, equating to over 8,000 more pounds of food brought in every other month. The SHSF is also a sustainable organization, as we signed on a new leadership team to carry on the work of the SHSF in the 2018-19 school year and beyond.
