We are a team of experienced biohackers from the Bay Area biohacker spaces Counter Culture Labs in Oakland, CA and BioCurious in Sunnyvale, CA. Together, we are engineening baker's yeast to produce casein, the milk protein which imparts many of milk's unique physical properties. Changes in casein structure during the cheese making process are what make cheese what it is. At eSionic I:Supervised a small team of chemists.Help select equipment and build out the lab.Reduced synthesis cost by nearly 100x for key material for lithium ion battery and supercapacitor electrolytes.Got quotes and interfaced with toll manufacturers to enable scale up of materials.Ran and maintained equipment including GCMS, DSC, TGA and several glove boxes. Ran analytical chemistry for an electrochemical CO2 separation membrane project.Used DOE to produce a printable copper ink incorporating inexpensive and non-toxic components with competitive performance.

I synthesized new plastic scintillators with a variety of uses including nuclear non-proliferation applications.The research team I worked with was the first to successfully demonstrate useful gamma ray spectroscopy from a plastic scintillator. Before our work it was generally believed that plastics were not capable of gamma spectroscopy and our innovation should lead to less expensive scintillators.We were also the first to produce plastics capable of gamma/neutron pulse shape discrimination. Again, prior to our work it was believed that plastics could not be used for this application. A commercial product is now available based on this research (EJ-299-33 from Eljen Technology).I also identified a stilbene synthesis which produces material with a ~2x increase in scintillation light yield compared to commercially available "scintillation grade" stilbene.

I synthesize and characterize thiophene based dendrimers and polymers for use in organic solar cells. I was in the organic photovoltaics group, part of the national center for photovoltaics, working under David Ginley.In addition I was a coauthor on two widely cited papers on the photodegradation of P3HT/PCBM films and on ultrasonic spray-coating of OPV active layers.
