I am currently working full-time as an artist and asset pipeline engineer at Brilliant Skies, a Scottish games company, while side-hustling as a freelance graphic designer. The grind is real. As am I.While I have always had a passion for creativity, my professional journey into design started with studying Product Design Engineering at Strathclyde University, graduating in 2015 with a 2:1 MEng. While I only worked in the industrial design industry briefly, my studies gave me an intimate knowledge of the design process and how to problem solve.It also introduced me to Adobe’s creative suite, from where my interest in graphic design developed. I thoroughly enjoy exploring their software, and no matter how much I learn it always feels like there is still so much more to be uncovered.I worked with a design mentor to develop strong branding skills, though I also have extensive experience in typesetting and am always eager for music related design projects such as gig posters and album artwork. My artistic and design skills are also used to create artwork for use in marketing or in the game itself.Responsibilities:Asset Optimisation: Ensuring that 3D models, textures, and animations are optimised for performance(reducing file sizes, improving loading times, etc.) without sacrificing quality.Tool Development: Collaborating with programmers to develop or improve tools that automate assetprocessing, such as importing, exporting, or converting assets into game-ready formats.Pipeline Integration: Working on the smooth integration of assets into the game engine, ensuring compatibility across different platforms and minimising issues during development.Workflow Improvement: Identifying bottlenecks in the asset creation process and propose/implement solutions to make the workflow more efficient (e.g., creating scripts or plug-ins for tools like Maya, Blender, or Photoshop).File Management: Maintaining and organising the asset library, making sure assets are correctly named,categorised, and versioned.Performance Monitoring: Collaborating with the team to monitor the performance of assets in-game,ensuring they meet frame rate and memory usage requirements.Artwork: Utilising my skills in graphic and product design to create marketing art if required and artwork for use in the game such as signs, logos, products.3D Art: Developing 3D assets to be used in game, either by modifying existing assets of creating new ones from scratch.
