About Ben Twomey
I grew up North of Brisbane in an unconventional but happy and loving family. I had a great childhood, and loved sailing and anything else on the ocean as a kid. My teens - typically 80’s. Awkward, confused, foolish and so much fun. Lucky to be alive. My 20’s - my warrior and life education decade. RMC Duntroon, Army Signals/EW/Intelligence Officer. I grew up on overseas service and hold my RMC classmates, for whom the military life was really meant, in awe and reverence. I now realise how far out of my depth I was. My 30’s - my science and simulation education decade. Master of science. Boeing Associate Technical Fellow in Operations Analysis and Simulation. Started thinking in terms of systems, uncertainties and risk. My 40’s - my calling decade. Rural firefighting, fire science and mgt, fire behaviour analysis, indigenous fire training and disaster risk mgt at Qld Fire. In Black Summer I glimpsed the future. My 50’s - focusing on making my mark in fire science, systems, fire operations management and advanced risk analytics. Improving resilience through applied science. I’m a bit neurodiverse, can be a little awkward and introverted but I’m also gregarious in short bursts. I don’t like overconfident, loud people, especially disingenuous people. I’m a synthesiser of concepts and ideas from across domains and I always seek to add value. I like to see and help those around me grow and succeed. I like public speaking, but not socialising en masse. I’m a very proud Dad, a very fortunate and grateful Husband of 20+ years to an amazing woman (a Canadian turned Aussie), and I’m very much still a work in progress. I’m a self-confessed fire behaviour and fire ecology geek, but not formally trained in the latter. I read a lot. I like to cook, and eat a little too much and I move less than I should, but I’m still pretty fit for an old man. My work is dedicated to unscrewing the planet, and my non-work time to volunteer firefighting, fire behaviour analysis, family, friends and community (not in that order).
