•Rural Water Development Strategy, Jamaica 2013— Jamaica’s National Water Commission (NWC) hired Castalia to assist in preparing its strategy to expand rural water access. Castalia helped craft the countries rural water strategy, setting out a clear path to bring water to hundreds of thousands of previously unserved customers across Jamaica’s thirteen parishes. For the project, Mr. Smith helped edit the National Water Companies Parish Plans. •World Bank Caribbean Energy Sector Engagement Framework, Caribbean 2013—The World Bank Latin America and Caribbean division hired Castalia to provide insights into the energy sector of the Caribbean in order to craft a new investment strategy for the region. Castalia reported on all aspects of Caribbean energy, including the natural gas, petroleum, and electricity sectors. Mr. Smith contributed reports on Nevis, Dominica, Grenada, and St. Vincent, including in depth financial analysis of electric utilities.•ExxonMobil vs. Republic of Argentina (Case No. ARB/04/16) 2012-2013—Castalia was hired to serve as an independent expert witness before the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Castalia is preparing an expert report for the Tribunal on the quantification of damages requested by the claimants, and on the validity of the claimants’ request for compensation. Mr. Smith assisted with all aspects of preparation of expert testimony, including price and cost of capital and gas price modeling.

• Lessons Learned from Restoring Degraded Lands in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest 2011-2012—The World Resources Institute in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University SAIS wanted to find economical solutions to reforestation across the world. Mr. Smith joined a small team of consultants who conducted research from the United States and Brazil, analyzing the enabling conditions for successful projects in four Brazilian states. Due to the success, the team was asked to further analyze lessons learned across many projects to build a framework to apply to future reforestation around the world.

• Driving Green Economic Growth for The City of New York’s Economic Development Corporation 2011—The City of New York’s Economic Development Corporation was searching for ways to bring more sustainability centered business to the city, particularly hoping to build off its strengths in the financial and services sectors. The EDC sought the expertise of AT Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council unit’s expertise in comparative analysis and industry research. Mr. Smith contributed to the project on several levels: by creating a framework to categorize various jobs and industries; by providing quantitative analysis of the existing economic structure in the City’s sustainable industries; and by conducting subject matter expert interviews with leaders in public, private, nonprofit, and academic fields.• Analyzing Global Business Process Outsourcing for a Major US Bank 2011—A Major US Bank engaged AT Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council to create a model in order to stay apprised of changing economic and political conditions throughout the world that could provide opportunities and challenges to the Bank’s offshored business process outsourcing operations. Mr. Smith contributed to the project by designing and building a sub-model component critical to the operation of the overall model.

• Analyzing the Impact of the Russian Coal Sector on Global Carbon Emissions 2010—Russian plans to shift away from the gas fired generation to coal fired power overt the coming decade presented an underreported threat to global emissions and the viability of a post-Kyoto climate agreement. The Climate & Energy group at the German Marshall Fund (GMF) conducts leading research into issues that effecting transatlantic climate relations. Mr. Smith worked with a leading writer on Russian energy issues to structure and edit a paper that brought the issue to light.• Preparing US and EU Diplomats with Timely Climate and Energy Briefings 2010—Senior US and EU diplomats regularly meet at GMF forums to discuss critical issues in transatlantic relations. Mr. Smith was tasked with preparing briefings for these senior officials about the latest state of climate change diplomacy and science in order to better facilitate dialogue.

(Formerly: Point Carbon)• Modeling and Presenting the US Carbon Offsetting Potential Under Various Policy Scenarios 2008-2009—The Advisory Group at Point Carbon was hearing from many of its clients that they were having a difficult time predicting how the price of carbon was going to effect their business, and how offsets were going to play into the price. To address this the advisory group created a multi-client engagement to model the effects of various proposed climate legislation on the availability of US carbon offsets at a range of carbon prices. Mr. Smith led several aspects of the modeling effort, bringing in Data from an array of public and private sources in order to create a model with the most accurate results. The team’s efforts resulted in the most successful North American Advisory project to that point.• Conducting Research for Large Energy-Focused Private Equity Fund 2008—A leading energy investment private equity fund hired Point Carbon’s Advisory Group to identify and research a number of firms as potential investment targets. Mr. Smith led research on a number of these firms in the solar, biofuel, small hydro, energy efficiency and carbon capture spaces.
