For the internet streaming Virgin broadcasts in more formats than any other radio station offering their services in Windows Media, MP3, OGG, Flash, Real and AAC+ formats. Network infrastructure for this is entirely managed in-house.My role at Virgin was initially to provide application development for the internal business systems. Additionally I provide development support to the digital media team, giving them the foundations required for new internet projects. Since 2008 I also took over responsibility of the core network infrastructure at Virgin both externally and internally. This includes Cisco router configuration, server deployment (Windows, Linux and Solaris) and administration of key UNIX servers that serve the Virgin Radio website, provide internal monitoring and run both internal and external applications. Virgin operate a multi-homed international IP network, present at numerous packet exchanges, which I look after; monitoring connectivity and bandwidth usage, setting up BGP peering arrangements and developing bespoke management tools. Most recently I redesigned our internal IP network including the deployment of a new high-availability combined ISA and Cisco ASA solution for the internal firewall and the implementation of a VOIP phone solution. I have also been working on making the Virgin network IPv6 capable so we can become the first radio station to offer full streaming services on the next generation IP network. Show less
