My career in product design started with a strong foundation in the basics: initially creating sketches and 3D CAD models of individual parts, then moving on to subassemblies and smaller structures, adding in important elements like stack-up analyses, GD&T and DFMEAs until finally being given creative control for full products with additional team members and resources. As part of a rapidly growing segment of TTI's business, I've had the opportunity to work on everything from lawn mowers and chore products to generators and power inverters to handheld products such as leaf blowers and a multi-tool attachment power head.

I spent 8 months living in Leipzig, Germany, working in one of the most state of the art and architecturally stunning manufacturing plants in the world, assisting in the successful initial launch of the 1-Series coupe and convertible and transitioning the 1-Series hatchback from the Regensburg facility. Our group was responsible for ensuring that all of the new features and options for the model launches were tested and proven. This involved determining and maintaining the final prototype build matrix for all build phases and all prototype cars as well as scheduling and tracking the transportation of all test vehicles to their required destinations and recording and communicating the testing results.

As I continued my co-op opportunity with BMW Manufacturing in my second term, I continued to learn and grow in the department assisting with the 04/05 and 06/05 X5 package launches. Additionally, I was able to work with the Methods group in determining the root cause of a hood alignment issue on the, at that time, new Z4 pre-series and found and monitored engineering releases pertaining to the EU material restrictions so that they could be tracked and implemented on time.

In my first co-op term with BMW Manufacturing, I had the opportunity to assist with two new X5 package launches (04/05 and 06/05). Working with the team, we specified and scheduled the test vehicles and series pre-runner builds and maintained the updated build phase and project schedules for those vehicles. We generated and update a technical content overview and matrix to track the new changes and determine which combination of options and features each of the prototype vehicles should have. I also helped update the project control panel and weekly status as well as led the collaborative development of a capacity planning tool to help determine headcount for the Launch and Change Management Department.

Best college Summer job ever! I spent the months between my freshman and sophomore years of university getting a crash course in the detailed workings of a car dealership. I was able to get hands-on experience in customer service, sales and maintenance; I did everything from washing cars and helping with documentation to swapping transmissions and replacing faulty hydraulic lines. Not only did this internship help give me a leg up on my competition for the BMW co-op program, but it also gave me self-confidence and a strong skill set and passion for working with my hands.
