About Ben Nadel

I am a customer-focused, full-stack, engineer and author with a passion for product design. In my over two decades of experience as a product lead, CTO, and technical co-founder, I've helped create a new industry vertical (Design-lead thinking at InVision); built a company up to a $1.2B valuation; communed with Fortune 100 customers; and, mentored my teammates (both formally and informally). My "true North" has always been customer empathy. I live to solve problems for those around me, whether it be internal clients or paying customers. I'm very pragmatic; and, I aim to strike a balance between investment of effort and diminishing returns. When in doubt, I bias toward action and simplicity. As someone who has been maintaining the same product for well over a decade and who has been blogging consistently since 2006 (I've written over 4.5k articles on www.bennadel.com), I have a deep understanding of how the choices I make today will impact the experience that I have tomorrow (and in the many years to come). I have grit and an appreciation for battle-tested technologies that let me brush off the shiny distractions and get the value-add work done.I recently published a book on the transformative nature of Feature Flags — learn more at https://featureflagsbook.com/I've also made up my own holiday, "Regular Expression Day" (June 1st), which I've been celebrating publicly for 15-years. RegEx pattern matching is another transformative technology and I want everyone to know how they can leverage it!

I'm most proud of the fact that I stepped up and became the de facto "Director of Product" for our legacy platform. As our engineering efforts became consumed with a re-platforming initiative, I remained as the solitary voice, advocating for—and often fighting for—the rights of our existing customers. This allowed me find my true voice and evolve into a mature Product-focused, Customer-lead engineer.I often used the phrase, "I'm willing to advocate for my customers even when the business won't." I didn't see myself as adversarial to the company; but, I did foster a "healthy tension" and—as often as I could—leaned on my customer interactions, viewing the world through their eyes.Other things that I'm proud of:* Created and lead "Office Hours" program for our customers.* Created and lead "Labs" program for experimental features.* Introduced and championed feature flags in product development.* Designed and built many user-facing product workflows.* Designed and built mass emailing system (7M+ emails).* Designed and built bulk data-export system for user off-boarding.* Designed and built InVision Design System (IDS) in Angular.js.* Designed and built incident management tool.* Designed and built administrative tools to unblock customer-facing teams.* Rebuilt entire email templating system to remove build-step.* Implemented in-bound email processing for reply-based interactions.* Regularly reviewed Zendesk backlog looking for "paper cut" / quick win tickets.* Regularly monitored MySQL slow-log looking for database bottlenecks.* Regularly monitored error logs looking for unreported issues.* Migrated server platform from Adobe ColdFusion to Lucee CFML.* Migrated storage platform from network-attached storage to Amazon S3.* Migrated client platform from jQuery to Angular.js.* Simplified architecture by merging core microservices back into the monolith.* Worked hand-in-hand with Design, Security, Sales, Operations, and Support teams.

    Invisionapp Inc Mar 2012 - Jul 2015

As the CTO and technical co-founder of InVision, I evolved a 4-page, jQuery-based proof-of-concept into a robust and modular AngularJS application that would—at its height—be valued at $1.2B. This required laying-down solid architectural patterns on both the front-end and the back-end that would help the rest of our team become optimally effective. I (informally) mentored my fellow engineers on the topics of ColdFusion, JavaScript, and SQL. And, used tools such as FusionReactor, Chrome's Performance Monitoring, and the MySQL Performance Log to locate and address memory leaks and performance bottlenecks.
  • Epicenter Consulting
    Chief Software Engineer
    Epicenter Consulting Jan 2008 - Apr 2012
    New York, New York, Us
I was the technical co-founder of Epicenter Consulting. There, I lead a small engineering team and personally built several ColdFusion products for our clients. My greatest achievement was creating an internal visual prototyping application that we eventually spun-off into its own venture-backed company: InVision App, Inc. Adjacent to work, my co-founder and I also managed the New York ColdFusion User Group (CFUG).
  • Nylon Technology
    Cto
    Nylon Technology Jan 2007 - Dec 2007
    New York, Ny, Us
I lead our research and development efforts, building internal products that laid the foundation for our client-facing applications. This significantly reduced the overall effort that our team had to exert when building individual client solutions. I also authored a weekly internal technology newsletter and lead our internal peer-learning program. My intent was to become a force-multiplier for our team by helping everyone both broaden and deepen their web development skills.
  • Nylon Technology
    Web Applications Developer
    Nylon Technology Jun 2003 - Jan 2007
    New York, Ny, Us
As a senior ColdFusion developer and the head of our research and development team, I kept the company ahead of the technology curve, pulling-in advances in ColdFusion, Flash, and JavaScript. I sat in on interviews as the technology consultant. I also organized peer teaching sessions in an effort to help all of our employees stay current with our technologies; and, I performed code reviews and made myself available at any time to help others—unblocking people on my team was a top priority. I re-built several of our ColdFusion-based solutions from the ground up to be cleaner, faster, standards compliant, and able to leverage all the new advances in the ColdFusion MX family of products. In this role, I fell in love with Regular Expressions and used them extensively to clean, sanitize, and process large datasets.
  • Koko Interactive
    Interface Designer And Qa
    Koko Interactive Jun 1999 - Jan 2003
I built and maintained the front-end to our ColdFusion powered extranet solution. I was also the lead Quality Assurance (QA) engineer, responsible for testing all aspects of the application. Most of the time, I was also tasked with fixing the errors that I found: ColdFusion, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or otherwise. I spearheaded our research and development efforts, experimenting with new advances in Flash Components and .NET applications. Outside of our primary extranet project, I developed smaller ColdFusion sites from start to finish.
