I obtained my BSc in Applied Biology and PhD from City University of Hong Kong in 2012 and 2019, respectively. After that, I continued my post-doctoral trainings in City University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Dr. Eddie Ma in the Department of Neuroscience. Currently, my research mainly focuses on the identification of bioactive small molecules and novel gene candidates that enable long-distance axon regeneration after injuries to PNS and CNS, respectively. The mature neurons from the CNS failed to regenerate due to the limited intrinsic regenerative capacity of CNS neurons and hostile extrinsic microenvironment. Although peripheral neurons are capable of axon regeneration, the motor functional recovery is usually incomplete largely due to the extremely slow rate of regeneration. Therefore, motor functional recovery is often suboptimal due to limited target reinnervation after prolonged denervation. Our target is to identify key mediators that are required for successful axon regeneration in both PNS and CNS using interdisciplinary approaches spanning from cell biology, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, high-throughput RNA-sequencing, drug screening platforms, optogenetics, AAV-mediated gene delivery system, animal behavioural assessment, and so forth. In the past years, we have successfully identified several bioactive small molecules and gene candidates that promoted long-distance axonal regrowth following axotomy. Our ultimate goal is to develop novel therapeutic interventions that can improve the clinical outcomes for the patients with nervous system injuries with a better quality of life.
