National Grid's infrastructure contains a vast array of network and computing technology spanning the last 30 years. Faults and service interruptions result in data capture by various pieces of equipment which then needs to be retrieved and analyzed. My responsbility was to facilitate that retrieval and provide it to the electrical engineers that perform the analysis. We accomplished that using traditional fiber optic network connections at substations, cellular connections that use VPN tunnels to access the corporate network, microwave links between substations and, in many cases, analog telephone lines. There are a handful of software tools used to retrieve and analyze the data. The primary tool in use at National Grid is Wavewin. I worked personally with the owner of Wavewin to fit it to National Grid's particular needs. In addition to supporting these existing substations I was also involved in the design of new substations. I worked with substation engineering to ensure that data collection in future stations would be done via up to date remote connections (many of the standards in place still call for analog telephone lines).I worked rather extensively with much of the network equipment in use at National Grid substations as well as quite a few different pieces of electric system protection equipment manufactured by ErlPhase and Schweitzer. Network equipment is mostly manufactured by RuggedCom and includes various models of their standard Ethernet switches as well as RX1500 router which is what accommodates a cellular modem and VPN capability for remote access. The product (SecureView) is an advanced desktop platform that provides end user access to multiple security domains via one workstation. My role on this program also involved direct interaction with various customers explaining how SecureView can be used in their environment and discussion of the various configuration options available.Prior to working on the SecureView project I worked on the research and prototyping of a similar type of system that fulfills more of a server-like role. The goal of that project was to create a multi-domain system that would allow a user on one security domain to securely and seamlessly browse web content hosted on another security domain. Our system was designed to be a higher performance replacement for the system currently in use by various parts of the DoD. The solution we designed utilized the Xen virtualization platform to pass data between security domains using NSA and DoD approved methods. Show less
