About Benn Rapson

I'm currently living my dream as an Assistant Language Teacher with the JET Programme in Japan. My Past Roles in Student Unions:Graduating with a BA Hons in Politics and International Relations marked a significant milestone in my journey. However, my true adventure lies in the world of student unions and the third sector.I've proudly worn multiple leadership hats, including being a former Student Union President, Vice President for Welfare, and Chair of the Board of Trustees at Strathclyde Students' Union - an organisation with a multi million pound turnover. During my time at Strath, I led efforts to secure hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment into enhancing the student experience—an accomplishment I'm particularly proud of, living by my motto, "Make Change Happen."Notably, during my tenure at Strath Union, I had the distinct privilege of meeting Barack Obama and presenting him with Honorary Membership of the Students' Union—definitely a career highlight! 🤩I also made significant contributions as Co-Chair of the Democratic Procedures Committee of NUS UK. I led the design of the 2023 National Conference, placing a strong emphasis on the need for democratic debate among members. My Current Voluntary Roles:While currently in Japan, I continue to make a positive impact from afar. I am the Chair of the Students' Union Governing Board at the University of Law Students' Union, managing this vital role remotely.I have recently taken on roles with the Association of Japan Exchange Teaching (AJET). As Director of Governance and Strategy I am leading on the development of the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan as well as a full Governance Review. As Co-Director of Community Relations I'm leading on JET recognition initiatives, drawing on my experience from the SU sector. My expertise lies in students' unions and governance—I'm a self-proclaimed governance nerd. Despite my relatively young age, I bring substantial experience as a trustee and board member. Future Aspirations:Upon my return from Japan, I'm setting my sights on furthering my career in governance and management. I'm passionate about driving positive change in society, and I'm always on the lookout for exciting opportunities and collaborations. 🌍Exploring Japan and Making a Difference:Beyond my professional journey, I have a deep affection for Japan. I'm looking forward to exploring this beautiful country and documenting my adventures on social media. 📸Collaboration and making positive change are at the core of my values. Let's connect and make great things happen together!

During my year as Chair of the Board of Trustees I led ALYVE UK through a challenging period of critical self reflection and laid solid foundations for a successful turnaround of the charity.Recognising that the charity had been treading water for a number of years, due to a lack of human capital, I led the Board of Trustees through a series of crucial conversations which have charted the path for ALYVE UK to move into a position where it can deliver its core objectives. These discussions tackled the very reasons for the existence of ALYVE UK and sought to reach a suitable balance between remaining radically youth led, while also ensuring we had sufficient human capital to deliver on our charitable objectives. From these deep reflective discussions, I designed the agreed Annual Plan for 2024 which is designed to get the charity moving again. The plan established a roadmap to; recruit a new expanded Board of Trustees, recruit a New Advisory Board that draws on a wider range of knowledge and expertise within society, develop a New Strategic Plan, and launch a Priority Campaign centred around the importance of Youth Voice in 2024.
