About Benny Samuel Eathakkattu Antony
Dr Antony completed a degree in Medicine with first class post graduate diploma. He was successful in an international scholarship to do a PhD in musculoskeletal medicine at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania. His PhD focussed on childhood and adulthood determinants of knee joint health in young adults. His expertise includes quantitative and semiquantitative measurements of knee structures from MRI, X-ray & Ultrasound, and design, conduct, analysis and scientific writing of clinical trials and cohort studies. Dr Antony is the Principal Investigator for the CurKOA trial, Yoga trial, T2 mapping of the Krill oil trial and 5 year follow-up of a vitamin D trial, and an investigator for the multicentre NHMRC funded clinical trials (Stem cell trial, Diacerein trial, Methotrexate trial). He is the PI for a Knee Biomarker Cohort study. Competitive fellowships (NHMRC, Arthritis Australia) support his postdoctoral research at Menzies. He has received grants from competitive sources totalling >$1.5 million. Dr Antony has published >100 research papers and two book chapters (h-index: =33; since 2017=28). His publications include top-tier journals such as JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, Ann Intern Med and Ann Rheum Dis. He has received Young Investigator awards from >15 organisations (ASBMR, OARSI, EULAR, APLAR, ARA) and was selected as the state finalist for the Young STEM Scientist (2017), Innovation of the Year (2020) and winner of a Young Tall Poppy Award 2016. He is a grant review panel member of NHMRC & ReumaNederland, a reviewer for >35 international journals, a Special issue Editor of 'Diagnostics' & 'Evidence-based CAMS' and an Associate Editor of IJRD (APLAR journal). He is a Young Investigator Committee member of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI). Dr Antony has given >25 oral presentations (including invited talks) at the annual scientific meetings of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), European Rheumatology (EULAR), Asian Rheumatology (APLAR), OARSI and Australian-New Zealand Rheumatology Conferences.
