Dr Benny Lo is an independent barrister and an arbitrator sitting in international commercial, investment treaty and sports arbitrations. A graduate of Cambridge University law school and a self-employed tenant at Des Voeux Chambers, Benny focuses on commercial, company, general civil and intellectual property dispute resolution and advises and represents local and overseas clients in litigation and international arbitration. Alongside his practice as counsel, Benny is an HKIAC, SIAC, CIETAC, BAC, LCIA, WIPO and CIArb arbitrator and has been appointed to sit in international arbitrations on commercial, commodities trading, shareholders disputes, intellectual property, maritime, professional negligence and investor-state matters. He has also been appointed to the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal set up under the International Federation of Basketball (FIBA) in Geneva, Switzerland.Benny has issued arbitral awards both on jurisdiction and substantive merits. As Sole Arbitrator, his recent jurisdiction award on a public policy issue was concurred by the Hong Kong High Court in Grandom Asia Holding Ltd v Henry Wai & Co (a firm) [2018] 1 HKLRD 808, the first time the Hong Kong court considered the arbitrability of solicitor-client taxation disputes. Recently, Benny received an appointment as a party-appointed arbitrator in the investment treaty arbitration, Jin Hae Seo v The Republic of Korea, sitting together with a former Judge of the International Court of Justice and a current Judge of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague, and a former member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations.Benny is also active in public service. He was appointed by the Chief Justice of Hong Kong to sit as a Temporary Deputy Registrar, High Court and a Deputy District Judge.Prior to becoming a lawyer, Benny had enjoyed a first career in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology for 7 years, including serving as Croucher Foundation Fellow under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Sir Gregory Winter FRS at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK.
