Please, call me Benny. I am a married middle-aged father of two amazing children. My first love has always been working in restaurants. However, my life changed when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2017. I have been in remission after a bone marrow transplant. As much as I have loved the rigor of working in kitchens, I decided to pursue a different hobby of mine: computer science. My very first computer was an Apple IIe. My next computer was an IBM x386 and then an IBM x486. My family was one of the first families in our neighborhood to have the internet. At that point, I was introduced to Netscape and Yahoo! I still have my original Yahoo! account. As the digital age continues to show no limits, I feel it is necessary to be more vigilant in protecting our PII and PHI. Not only are governments waging cyber warfare against each other but some groups are attacking businesses with ransomware or other hostile acts.I have worked in various restaurants over my twenty-eight-plus years and I have been employed in my local school district as a nutrition assistant since 2016. As I watch these children go about their days oblivious to the world around them, I think about my son and my daughter. I thought about how they are growing up in a world of computers without the knowledge or understanding of the ins and outs of this technology. It may be time for a different type of leader or teacher to help navigate for the future.
