My name is Benoit Penel and I'm passionate about new technologies and new methods that allow the use of DNA or eDNA as a new resource in the context of ecological studies and biomonitoring. This interest has led me to pursue a multidisciplinary education, combining a Master's Degree in Ecology and a Master's Degree in Bioinformatics, and now to write a thesis supervised by Christine Meynard (CBGP - INRAE), Gael Kergoat (CBGP - INRAE) and Julien Haran (CBGP - CIRAD). This work is entitled "Effects of agricultural practices on the diversity of field-edge Beetles: metabarcoding and community ecology approaches applied to large-scale biodiversity monitoring". It will be based on a national monitoring effort that has been carried out annually since 2012 in field margins of major crops in continental France (500+ sites) and will allow the assessment of the unintended effects of agricultural practices on field margins of the beetle community. To achieve this, the first objective of this work is to improve the accuracy and speed of beetle community identification by mixing molecular and morphological approaches. At the same time, we will assess the rate of systematic error of molecular approaches when used in isolation. Furthermore, once the data collection and taxonomic identification of the beetle community will be achieved, the assessment of the unintended effects of agricultural practices, both direct and indirect, will be done.
