Benoit Rivard is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. He is a leading expert in the development of applications of hyperspectral imaging for the energy and mineral resource sectors and has led a related start-up. His efforts aim to improve the effectiveness of the oil and mining industry to delineate and manage their targeted resources. Using Canadian Foundation for Innovation funding he has established a hyperspectral imaging facility unique in Canada of value to the resource sector.In 2009 he held the B.C. Leadership Chair in Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, based at the University of Victoria. He has served on the board of several companies in the resource and space sectors and on the research advisory boards of the Canadian Space Agency, the Canada Center for Remote Sensing and the Geoide Network of Centres of Excellence. He holds a BSc and MSc in geology from McGill university and a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Washington University in Saint-Louis where he conducted research in a NASA regional planetary facility.
