About Benoît Murphy, M.Sc., Cfa, Frm

“I am forever learning and changing.” – W.E. Deming (1900-1993)My professional life is characterized by a deep analytical mindset, adept at identifying issues and crafting innovative solutions. I take pride in my independence and initiative, qualities that have fueled my drive for building and leading new ventures. My journey has been shaped by a steadfast dedication to success and resilience, which have stood by me across varied roles and challenging environments. Here is my professional story:From information processing employee…"If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you are doing" – W.E. Deming (1900-1993)My interest in business cycles and finance sparked during Paul Volcker’s back-to-back recessions in the early 1980s, aimed at curbing inflation. I completed a master’s degree in economics at the start of the 1990s and expanded my qualifications with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designations. During the first part of my career, my professional path has been diverse, spanning roles such as university economic lecturer, retail broker, economic consultant, and public servant. From 1996 to 1997, I worked as a financial market economist for a Canadian Bank. From 1997 to 2019, I played an increasing role at a large Canadian pension plan, initially in the fixed-income portfolio department and later managing the investment strategy department. During this period, I not only monitored global economic and financial developments but also developed several in-house structured financial and economic data processing systems, which significantly enhanced our analytical capabilities, back-office quality control processes and decision-making efficiency.…to portfolio management systems entrepreneur"When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates." – Thomas S. Monson (1927-2018)In 2020, driven to harness the possibilities offered by Big Data, Python, and PowerBI, I founded a financial information processing and consulting firm that provides front office economic and financial research consulting services to investment management firms. The firm is now morphing into providing cloud-based Quantitative Analysis as a Service (QAAS). By the fall of 2024, we are set to launch a portfolio management system that integrates fundamental equity market data with precise daily return and risk attribution calculations, providing uniquely enhanced timely insights to asset managers and asset owners.

Drove top-down proactive research for $18B private Canadian pension fund, covering present and future pension liabilities. Identified potential short and long-term areas of surplus risk.Co-created (with actuary) 5-year funding simulation model for monitoring and planning assets, liabilities, and net cashflow that incorporated current market conditions, and built prospective long-term macroeconomic and forward market scenarios for long-term surplus-management purposes. This simulation tool remained relevant for 20+ years (1998 to 2019) and contributed to fully funded position of pension plan by linking prospective capital market returns to pension costs. Improved tactical responsiveness of investment decisions by building total fund performance attribution system that split total returns in beta, alpha from portfolios, alpha from 5 key asset allocation strategies, all including local and FX effects in format fully reconcilable with financial statements, including custodian reports. Achieved substantial cost savings by avoiding purchase of customized external system for 12 years. Engineered total fund risk quantification and attribution module of absolute portfolio risk, risks relative to benchmarks / future liabilities, and local and multiple currencies FX impacts for investment policy and tactical positions, furthering asset allocation responsiveness. Linked historical performance attribution results with forward-looking implied risk contribution on position-by-position basis, optimizing overall risk budget. Targeted delivery of 25% of whole firm’s annual alpha investment performance objective (+0.25% out of +1.00% p.a.). Oversaw enhanced currency portfolio management mandate. Formalized management of currencies by assessing Fund’s currency exposure independently from local market asset allocation deviations and successfully delegating enhanced currency indexing mandate to direct report.
