Profile bio

About Benoît Robin

Since I was a kid, I've always dreamed of being an Inventor. As I grew up, I realized the nearest real-life jobs were Engineering and Sci-Fi writing...I've since roamed in Engineering and with friends, I write collectively the Hoshikaze 2250 Sci-Fi universe. For some years, I've also joined the CGT Workers' Union and act as a Workers' Representative in the company I currently work for. I've recently attended a training I've been coached in 2008 in coaching. I didn't end up being certified yet - this may or not still happen -, but it helped me clarify my mind about my next professional moves. I may never become a professional coach, but surely a trainer, more than ever a workers' representative and if possible, a professional writer...

Methods And Tools Engineer

Current

Paris La Défense

I've now switched from IT to Engineering. I still work to give engineering people the software tools suited to their needs, but now I approach that goal from the software tools rather than the IT infrastructure point of view. This satisfies my geeky nature, as it allows me to be more on the field while keeping the global view, but with less management and paperwork.

Collective Writing Of A Science-Fiction Universe

Current

Since Engineering School, I work on this hobby project, which has grown into a large collective endeavour.Hoshikaze 2250 is a future history, splitting from our reality at a point in the '80s. Mankind keeps expanding to the stars and encounters alien, sentient species, among which coexistence gets perforce more or less organized. It is centered around a darwinian view of aliens, a space-opera style with hard-science and cyber elements, and a craving to built a setting with no species either dominant or destitute. It was created around 1990 as a test world for a universal tabletop RPG. From 1998 on, there has been a website with an encyclopaedia and short stories. In 2007, we founded an Association. We are now a core team of 6-9 members, an extended team of some twenty people, and thirty to fifty fans occasionally contributing. Our achievements and current works include:- A Comic Book "Engelstadt, un vol de rêves", by Thomas Gervais and myself, published by YIL,- 2 novels from Philippe Halvick, "Les parias de l'espace" and "Les naufragés de l'espace", both published by Rivière Blanche,- 3 self-published Short Stories Books so far, including 10 authors,- "Stars of Call", a video game written as a Total Conversion of NAEV, an open-source EV-like,- Many paints and illustrations from our universe,- An RPG under Chaosium's BaSIC system and a Coop Boardgame currently at prototype stage. As of mid-2019, we're mainly working on our 3rd Novel, the 4th Short Stories Book, and the Video Game "Stars of Call", with preparatory work being done on the Role-Playing Game.We try to develop as a Community of Creation, inspired by Open Source and free ways of thinking. Each year, we attend to a dozain of local SF, RPG and Videogame (OK, let's say collectively "geeky") Conventions in France. We also often build internships and partnership with schools: so far, EPITA, the University of Marne-la-Vallée, the Lycée L'Initiative, Ecole Pivault, ISART-Digital and ITIN !

Workers' Representative - Ds, Ce+Dp+Chsct Then Cse+Cssct

Current

Paris La Défense

In 2013, I joined the CGT Workers' Union, and more specifically, the UGICT, its branch dedicated to Executives, Technicians and Engineers. Since then, I have been elected thrice in workers' representation committees. In these site-wide comitees, I represent the company's workers. We are consulted on social and economic issues happening on the site, like restructuring, projects impacting working conditions, health and safety issues.I have also been sent by the CGT as a member of a Framatome-wide representative committee, and take part in internal CGT think-tanks, notably on working conditions, health and safety.

Jun 2013 - Present

It Admin

Paris La Défense

I worked at a Solutions Center, which aims to provide the best IT tools in manageable terms for highly technical needs, such as CAD & CAM, Plants Design and Engineering or Technical Information Management. On this job, I was acting on a wide spectrum, ranging from project manager to architect and actual system admin. I needed this widespread range of activities and not only project management. I'm actually quite of a geek and only managing projects from high in the sky would be an unbearable frustration : managing only costs, delays and paperworks, moving pawns and envying them as they work on what I crave to do!

Dec 2004 - Jun 2014

It Director

As IT director, I took over the IT department with much to do and managed over a 3-years period to upgrade the infrastructure and architecture significantly, jumping from NT4 to 2000/2003 and preparing for XP, training the team to technical and project management skills and implementing new IT tools for several departments.

Dec 2001 - Nov 2004

It Director

Paris

Over the course of 5 months, I began upgrading Xilam's IT infrastructure, but the conditions were not optimal, especially with me doing extreme commuting, so I preferred to resign and recruit a successor living nearer.

Mar 2001 - Jul 2001

Consultant In It Qos

Synopse

Orsay

Over the course of these years, I acted as technical expert and architect on HelpDesk, QoS, System Management and Architecture Dashboard solutions. I was engaged in pre-sales, architecture design, actual build and setup of various such systems.

Sep 1998 - Feb 2001

Calculation And Mechanical Engineer

Aérospatiale

Magny-Les-Hameaux, Puis Les Gâtines, Puis Châtillon

I began working not in IT, but in the Mechanical Calculation field. this was at the time the perfect job for me, combining a passion for simulation and modelling with a geek's job surrounded by IT.I worked at structural calculations, both static and dynamic, detonics and propulsion, and finally complex dynamic modelling. I was lucky enough to work on such projects as Tiger and NH90 helicopters and the Ariane V launcher. Finally, I reoriented towards IT and quit to become consultant, because IT was still my core passion at that time.
