The facility produces residential air conditioning and heat pump units in a massive scale, as it contains 9 assembly lines and many material feeder operations. It was my first experience in a manufacturing facility of that scale and so a lot of my learning was done through observation of the processes involved. Additionally, I was fortunate to be in Tyler during a period of facility changes. Another Trane residential plant in Ft Smith, AR was closing and its production capabilities were re-distributed to the remaining Trane plants. The Over/Under package unit was sent to Tyler and I was given the opportunity to work with the Industrial & Facilities Engineers to help install the new line. When I arrived in May, equipment was beginning to arrive in Tyler. By July, the line was mostly installed and limited production began while line operators were trained. At this point, I worked on Rapid Improvement Events at the Over/Under line where we re-organized materials to be more accessible at the point of use. Our efforts lead to the increased production capacity of the line from 6 units per day to around 16 units per day by the beginning of August.
