With over 20 years in technology, at the forefront of each new wave of technology and operational paradigm, from pre-web ISP, to enterprise midrange systems, to web startups, to developing and building one of the first clouds, to helping lead the early DevOps evolution, and recently bringing my Solaris Zones leadership since 2004 into the modern container era. Most of all, I love building teams, developing leaders and advancing the evolution of management and leadership for IT & Operations to face the new challenges posed by the 21st Century.

Director Of Cloud OperationsJoyent Sep 2006 - Nov 2014Mountain View, California, UsI joined Joyent to bring my OpenSolaris expertise to help the recently merged Joyent & TextDrive develop the concept of Grid & Utility Computing, which later would be called "Cloud". I developed the Solaris Zones and associated Solaris technologies into a viable customer serving platform. I designed and wrote custom performance and systems monitoring software for the new multi-tenant infrastructure, spec'ed and build the server infrastructure, designed and built data centers around the world (including Norther California, Virginia, Las Vegas, Massachusetts, Amsterdam, Toyko, Hong Kong, and Beijing).I hired and developed the Operations Team. I contributed many of the methods I developed for operating the Joyent Cloud and managing the operations team with the early DevOps community in 2009. Among these included a strong emphasis on adapting LEAN methodologies and re-imaging of traditional ITSM methods around change management and value chains, which after my 2011 USENIX LISA Keynote "The DevOps Transformation" became an increasingly important contribution to the DevOps methodologies.During my final year at Joyent I ran an R&D Team focusing on Docker, Mesos, large distributed filesystems to support containization, and new methods of performance data analysis across our cloud. -
Sr. Unix Systems AdminHomestead Technologies May 2001 - Aug 2006Tempe, Arizona, UsManaged all UNIX systems, Software, SAN's and backup infrastructure supporting Oracle, as well as F5 Load Balancers and NetApp Filers supporting the homestead.com web site. The infrastructure supporting Homestead's heavy use of the Oracle Database was built on Sun Cluster, Vertias Volume Manager and File System deployed on Sun E4500's, E450's, E420R's, and later V1280's with Fibre Channel storage backends. In addition to the technical architecture and scaling of the infrastructure I built a variety of tools (such as "ToasterView" for NetApp Filer management which was later adopted internally by Yahoo!, "luxparse" for VxVM and A5x00 Integration, etc), built out a comprehensive set of policies and document sets for the total infrastructure, and even wrote several publications including a USENIX "Short Topics" book entitled "The Sysadmin's Guide to Oracle" to aid other systems administrators managing Oracle infrastructure. -

TechnicianComputer Cite Dec 1996 - Dec 1997A local "mom and pop" style PC shop. I specialized in PC UNIX and 3D Graphics Workstations. Not the most prestigious job but it paid the bills while I attended school and felt good to help local PC buyers avoid being taken advantage of by other PC sellers in those days. We were known widely in the area for our thoroughness and integrity, and that was what was important.
