Technical Lead
As a Technical Lead with Physician Experience, I help lead and support several delivery teams. We collectively share the same goal: to provide our physician partners with a robust and easy to use mobile application so they can focus on supporting their patients.
Senior Application Developer
As lead iOS developer for the Mobile Community of Excellence (MCoE), I help develop and deploy mobile applications for our patients, clinical teammates, and business users. The applications we develop affect the daily lives of our users, and as such our applications must meet very high standards for reliability, security, and maintainability. I help define those standards and drive applications toward meeting them.My responsibilities range from design to deployment, and include the following:Developing iOS native mobile appsSoftware DesignGuiding teams on implementationConsulting on best practicesLeading technical discussions in various capacitiesInterfacing with and getting guidance from architecture groupsOver time I've been given ever-increasing purview over iOS development within DaVita, and have continued to develop leadership skills while staying abreast of current industry trends.I've developed a passion for software architecture, and system architecture to the extent that I've been involved with it. I really enjoy being given a big overall problem and being asked to solve it. Increasingly, this involves working with teams, getting buy-in, and developing a plan towards implementation. There is a tendency in the industry to over-engineer software systems (something the healthcare industry seems especially prone to), but I strive to select an elegant solution to the problem that fits current needs and flexes towards the future.I have been given the chance to attend many great conferences, and enjoy doing so. I've been to both WWDC and AltConf, and also attend many local tech events in Denver. While these are personally fulfilling, I strive to make them also applicable to the team by condensing the conference into a "brief" or sometimes into a lunch and learn. I may choose to do several briefs, depending on the conference, to different audiences (e.g. to devs and designers). I do this so the knowledge is disseminated throughout the team.
Application Developer
This is a small business, so I do what needs to get done. This has previously included, but is not limited to:Ruby on Rails web apps and mobile APIsNative iOS appsNative Android appsHybrid HTML5 apps (some with native plugins)Deploying Android/iOS/Blackberry apps to app storesDeploying web apps/APIs to Heroku or cloud hostingPHP/CMS web developmentWriting Technical SpecificationsVetting design ideas or project plansResearch and DevelopmentEstimating project development time (including advocating for Agile practices)Scrum participantWhen I left, I was the longest tenured developer in the company. Chepri allowed us a bit of freedom in how we choose to implement projects, so I went through a fair amount of tech stacks. This gave me a certain amount of perspective on the technology and how to select the right tool for the job. Over time and throughout projects I developed a good intuition and reasoning skills for solution design. I do appreciate the role of being a thought leader, and I continue to improve in that capacity along with my regular developer duties.I personally handled most app store or enterprise app deployments that came through the door, and I also usually handled the Rails deployments. On the Rails side, I greatly appreciate the efforts of the capistrano project and the heroku toolbelt. iOS, on the other hand, is several years of painful experience that I'm grateful to have finally mastered (but Apple keeps us on our toes by randomly changing parts of the interface/process).I also handled push notification integrations, whether we decided to roll our own or integrate with a third party. It's something I've done several times and am comfortable with the process from the device side to the server side.
Application Developer
At Brighter Minds I was employed as a Software Developer and was responsible for a myriad of duties. Some of my responsibilities include:Web development (CMS and CakePHP custom)Game Development (Flex and Native Mobile Cocos2d)Game tooling and distribution packagingMaster disc image creation for boxed softwareCustomer SupportI developed several desktop games using Adobe Flex, as well as several native mobile iOS games using both the native SDK as well as the Cocos2d game framework. I mainly interacted with writers and game designers to define the idea, and then through a series of iterations and reviews, helped refine and build out the final vision for the games. I was then responsible for distributing those games through either desktop publishing channels or mobile app stores. Also, before the era of the iBooks Store and self-publishing, I developed an ebook framework to create iPhone app versions of some of Brighter Minds printed publications. The app would simply wrap an ebook, accepting some customization for theme and image, and extract the TOC from the ebook. I would then submit the book to the Apple app store.Brighter Minds was formative to me, in that it was my first professional programming job out of college, and thus the official start of my career. I learned not only technical concepts and practices but also that being a developer means having integrity and being accountable. It also means being a real driver of top-line value, and not just bottom-line savings.
