About Garth Benson
I graduated in Spring of 2018 from Iowa State University with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. My early passion for science and engineering in grade school has led me to become a passionate engineer, researcher, and tinkerer. Notable personal engineering projects include building multiple 3D printers and upgrading a manual metal lathe to CNC in addition to multiple ongoing projects in Python. I also have performed research with The Bentil Group at ISU and at Argonne National Lab. My capstone project was to design an autonomous robot for use on a construction site. My main passions include: robotics, 3D printing, and advancing welfare through knowledge acquisition by scientific and engineering research.
Listed skills include Arduino, Solidworks, Python, Project Management, and 11 others.

Applications Development Engineer At Chromatic 3D Materials
New Product Development And Design To Value Engineer
In my role as a DTV/NPD engineer it is my responsibility to oversee and be a resource in various projects to uphold the quality of refrigeration case design while advancing competitiveness in COGS. This is accomplished by developing innovative new products as well as undertaking projects to maximize cost-competitiveness on various levels and scopes. Projects can vary greatly in size and scope, from being part of a cross-functional team to managing projects of various scope and complexity.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
As a researcher in The Bentil Group, I performed multiple roles as Dr. Bentil set up her lab for brain injury research. Initially, my primary role was to modify an existing force deflection gauge for indenting soft tissue. This included modifying the device for data capture using a NI DAQ. CAD models, all created from dimensional drawings for a shock tube design were also developed as another project in the research group. Ultimately, I performed any task that needed to be performed at the time as Dr. Bentil’s needs were frequently changing due to her lab being in its emergent stages. These tasks included literature reviews, becoming the SME on the autoclave in the lab, training staff, performing tests, and inspecting other labs and their SOPs to collaborate with others on the team to create SOPs for The Bentil Group.
President Of Student Chapter, Iowa State University
As the President of ASME, I led cabinet meetings and oversaw the operations of the club, ensuring that the club operated smoothly and that the club met requirements set by the university.
Project Leader
I have been the Project Leader for the local ASME chapter for two semesters. I have led the build of two Prusa i3 FDM 3D printers for ASME as well as hosting Software Defined Radio learning sessions in this time.
Suli Research Internship
I performed tribology research by performing tests, collecting data, and performing critical measurements afterwards. This included following testing procedure accurately and consistently, running the tribometers, and then cleaning the specimen and performing measurements on it using a 3D profilometer and optical microscope. During my tenure I noticed an opportunity to automate some of the data analysis process and developed a VBA script to import data into a presentation format. This sped up the analysis process drastically and also made the presentation format much more consistent across presentations. At the end of the internship, I presented on my research at a poster presentation to other researchers at Argonne.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant for the undergraduate manufacturing lab class, my main responsibilities included communicating the relevance and importance of basic manufacturing concepts such as surface finish and casting to students. I took personal responsibility to ensure that students learned effectively in my role as UTA. I took initiative to review the material at least twice before a new unit and to ensure that I had a plan in the classroom and sat in on more experienced UTAs classes in order to see how others taught and to understand and review the material and teaching methods on a more fundamental level. The lab class was one of a few practical classes where we applied engineering theory. As such, I enjoyed the material and also enjoyed interacting with the students and trying to kindle that flame that illuminates the amazing world around us.
Manufacturing Engineer Intern
As a manufacturing engineer intern at AmesburyTruth, a fenestration company located in Owatonna, Minnesota, my main responsibility was to improve the efficiency of a specific production line. Over the course of my internship, I performed a multiple time studies and communicated cross-departmentally to drive profitable and ergonomic modifications on the line. Improvements made, such as rearranging the production line to operate more efficiently and substantiate the need for new equipment, were implemented before my departure. In addition to these responsibilities, I created a VBA GUI for operators to use as a quality assurance measure, thus creating another quality measure to ensure boxes are packed with no missing parts.
