From 1979 to 1999, he was the founding Executive Director of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The Board and its sponsors, ACEP and UAEM, now SAEM, successfully negotiated recognition for Emergency Medicine as a primary medical specialty in 1979.
