About Ben Spilak
I am a friendly, diligent, and resilient collaborator with a mission to enter medical school. After obtaining a BSc in Honors Physiology, I pursued a Master of Management to follow a passion for interpersonal communication and teamwork. As a result of my academic success in my undergraduate degree, I am humbled to be a recipient of the Woitas Family Business Excellence Graduate Scholarship, providing me with a full ride through my graduate degree.Experience as a competitive and persuasive public speaker has enabled me to develop professional communication skills. Earning the title of the Alberta Provincial Champion of Persuasive Speaking in 2017 was one of my proudest achievements and solidified my confidence in speaking in front of hundreds of people.Completing a research thesis in cancer biology under the supervision of Dr. Armin Gamper at the Cross Cancer Institute allowed me to hone significant organizational skills. Additionally, critical thinking was necessary to succeed in the lab, where protocol problems would arise daily. The lab, therefore, provided me with significant experience in practical problem-solving. My current involvement in research concerning gender impacts has increased my problem-solving skills and provided me with technical skills.Serving as the Co-President of the Undergraduate Physiology Students’ Association allowed me to grow my leadership skills. By delegating tasks, encouraging shared decision-making, and resolving conflicts, I learned to collaborate while supporting others in a leadership role.Altogether, my unique experiences demonstrate not only my academic ability but also my ability to collaborate and communicate with others while solving problems hands-on.In addition to pursuing medicine, I plan to combine my science knowledge with newfound business acumen to innovate healthcare. I am interested in the healthcare innovation space and would relish connections with those connected to the industry.
