Ben is a Mine Backfill Geomechanics Specialist at P&C. He has emerged as a leading practitioner of backfill instrumentation since leading fieldwork campaigns for the University of Toronto between 2007-2010 and then developing these research approaches for the production environment on a consulting basis. Ben’s work has consistently provided new insights into in situ backfill behaviour during a decade which coincided with the increasing operational use of barricade instrumentation from a rarity to best practice tool in safely optimizing backfilling efficiency. Previously, Ben developed and led a successful backfill geomechanics group within a niche Rock Mechanics consulting firm, while also filling senior management roles and conducing other rock mechanics and micro-seismic based work. Ben has led numerous barricade design and backfill geomechanics projects on both a consulting and research level. His underground experience and success in pragmatically adapting research level field work to the needs of the operations environment adds significant value to these projects. Ben has a PhD in Applied Seismology / Rock Physics, which resulted in several journal publications detailing insights into rock fracture and fault slip on the laboratory scale.
