With the designation of Cambodia's first Marine Protected Area (colloquially, Marine Fisheries Management Area, MFMA) a Technical Working Group (TWG) has been established to aid with strategic planning, governance and management of the reserve. TWG representation consists of local authorities, the national government, community fisheries, private sector organisations and NGOs.

"Inspired by a passion for Cambodia and a commitment to sustainable development, we initiate and promote projects that improve the wellbeing of communities and environments across coastal and marine areas. To aid this vision we have project partnerships with Fauna & Flora International, Plan International, International Medical Relief and the Royal Government of Cambodia's Fisheries Administration."Current roles within the organisation include (but are not limited to):- Strategic planning for all coastal & marine projects, both community and conservation.- Development of future community and conservation initiatives, and their associated budgets.- Ongoing management of operational projects.- Oversight of operational budgets and associated sources of funding.- Staff recruitment and management.- Facilitation and oversight of project partner agreements and external collaborations.- Postgraduate research supervision on behalf of the Royal University of Phnom Penh.- Stakeholder engagement and partnership building with local authorities, community fisheries, private sector organisations and NGOs.- Designing, developing, launching and managing the Foundation’s marine conservation projects. Koh Rong, Cambodia

Based in Cambodia as the Field Base Manager for Coral Cay Conservation (CCC), we worked intimately with a number of large stakeholders to better the conservation efforts in the Gulf of Thailand; two key stakeholders in association with this project were Fauna & Flora International and the Fisheries Administration of Cambodia. A central aim, through primary research, was to outline a suitable area for the designation of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the Koh Rong archipelago; a project that I managed with great success. This MPA now limits resource use under strict fisheries laws. The fundamental core of my role with CCC was the management of both local (Cambodian) and UK staff. Diligent budget management and continual reporting to our UK-based Head Office ensured the efficient running of a remote marine conservation base, which became one of Cambodia’s key marine research and conservation centres.

Pulau Hoga, S.E.Sulawesi, Indonesia

A fixed term contract working in the field to lead and coordinate two research programmes, one assessing the population biology of Acanthaster planci (crown-of-thorns starfish) and one creating biotope maps of the island’s main ecosystems and dive sites, using ArcGIS. Another role was to teach a modular course in coral reef biology and ecology to dissertation students; this included leading a number of species identification based SCUBA dives. Responsibilities of these roles included: managing research assistants and volunteers; supervising both in-water and laboratory based experiments; giving lectures and public speaking to local Indonesian residents, visiting academics and students; compiling sections of a report for submission to the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.

London Zoo, Aquarium

Voluntary position - 250+ hours’ experience working in both freshwater and marine sections to assist with the smooth running of the aquarium. Responsibilities included: daily cleaning of exhibit windows; maintenance of tanks; basic maintenance of filtration equipment; taking records of temperature/salinity/pH; food preparation and subsequent feeding; census counts of fish, corals and invertebrates.

School Of Geosciences

Undertaking laboratory work in various geoscience and biology laboratories, and fieldwork throughout Sydney Harbour. Laboratory work included analysing water samples from Sydney Harbour to quantify total suspended and dissolved sediment concentrations following precipitation events after long antecedent periods. This was carried out using paper filters, acid digestion techniques and an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES).

Utila, Honduras, Central America

A fixed term contract working in the field to supervise and coordinate field sampling for undergraduate dissertation and social science research projects in mangrove, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems. Responsibilities included; compiling a suitable methodology to ensure the students were up to date with current research techniques; ensuring that all kayak and SCUBA groups conformed fully to the safety and operating procedures; assisting with student projects as required both in the field and in the laboratory; assisting with the running of the SCUBA Dive Operations Centre as required (i.e. issuing equipment, monitoring the radio, general supervision of local staff etc.); aiding with data collection for an Oxford University PhD. student in the mangrove systems, focusing on benthic invertebrate biodiversity and juvenile fish ecology; administrating large volumes of data into Excel spreadsheets from a multitude of sources; presenting weekly lectures on ‘Mangrove and seagrass system functioning, dynamics and integration of key ecosystems’ to visiting academics, degree students, schools, social scientists, volunteers and general visitors; carrying out such other duties that were from time to time required for the efficient operation of the Marine Centre.

At the age of 18 I founded a local wildlife conservation group in the UK. I was then elected by the community to chair the group, coordinate management procedures and develop operational projects. Responsibilities included; overseeing the group’s executive; organising and chairing regular meetings; fundraising; advertising; keeping up to date with any administration issues and leading a team of volunteers in several field excursions. Achievements during this time included ‘setting up’ the group with the parish council, followed by successfully completing various environmental management projects.
