About Bento Amaral
Bento is a Master of Wine student. He’s one of the world’s leading experts in Port wine, summing 23 years of experience while working in the Institute of Douro and Port Wines (the world’s Port certification and control center) as head of the tasting committee and technical director. He also teaches at several universities, his classes include wine tasting, wines of the world and Ports and he is chair of sensory analysis for the Biotechnology major in Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Bento does wine consultancy for several companies and institutions, and he is a jury member in several international wine competitions for more than 2 decades.Besides wine, the sea is Bento’s other great passion. After the accident at the beach in 1994 that left him tetraplegic, it was precisely the sea that allowed him to live some of his biggest dreams: he was the World Disabled Sailing Champion in 2005 and was placed 9th in the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008. Some of Bento’s greatest achievements are:- Awarded, in 2009, by the Portuguese President the title of Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique;- Awarded, in 2014, by the French Government the title Chevalier dans l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole;- Nominated, in 2020, for “Person of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast;
