Tijdens mijn stage bij de Nationale Trainingsselectie Shorttrack ondersteun in de staf en studeer ik af op het gebied van trainingsbelasting en herstel. De officiële naam van mijn afstudeerproject is hierbij: "How can internal and external training load measurements be used to predict future wellness scores in shorttrack speed skating?" Met andere woorden: tijdens mijn stage probeer ik op een wetenschappelijke manier inzicht te krijgen in hoe de atleten zich voelen en hoe verschillende soorten trainingen hier effect op hebben. Vervolgens koppel ik dit terug aan de coach, waarna hij evalueert hoe trainings-ready atleten zijn en wat voor hen de juiste belasting van die dag zal zijn.

Af en toe begeleidt in individuele atleten richting (bijzondere) persoonlijke doelen. Vaak is dit doel een combinatie van een fysiek en mentaal doel. Dit doe met de ervaring die ik heb opgedaan in mijn eigen trainingen, mijn achtergrond als (sport)fysiotherapeut en bewegingswetenschapper. Hieronder een aantal voorbeelden:

As a trainee physical therapist I worked together with my supervisor to get and keep the personnel of the Dutch Royal Navy healthy. Due to the physical challenges they are exposed to every single day, this is a challange every day. In coorperation with their commanders, we tried to make a individual trajectory for every man in such a way they could particpate in their training towards missions ánd recovered from injuries at the same time.During this traineeship I learned to be creative and think outside the box. Being a physical therapist isn't that hard when you can follow the protocals you are asked to follow. But, in an environment like this, this way of working does not excist. I learned to keep my treatment-goals in mind, but also combine these with the obligations of the Marines.Apart from that, working in a military environmant was a new experence for me as well. Living on the military base means you are eating, drinking, sleeping and working out surrounded by very desciplined people every single day. I learned swimming, I learned training hard, and it is no surprise I started competing high-level triathlon after this traineeship. I really appreciated my time being in such a disciplined environment and love this way of working together.
