Imagine a world where we can all expect to live for a hundred years? How would that change the way you live, work and lead yourself and others? This world is already here, yet we are not ready for it! Our mindsets are still stuck in a stereotypical ageist idea of what it means to be 50 and beyond. It cost organisations and society billions and our mental and physical health is suffering as well. The biggest challenge for people in the workforce aged 50+ is the cultural narrative about what it means to age. Society claims that a younger person is somehow better, healthier, more productive, more creative and more successful than an older one. Ageism is widespread. According to WHO, half the world’s population is ageist against older people and one in three people in the UK report experiencing age prejudice or age discrimination Rather than wait for society to catch up with longevity, I seek to change our behaviors and mindsets from within. We need to be aware of our patterns of thought and behaviour before we can make a change. Through mindfulness, I facilitate awareness, acceptance, self-compassion and solutions by asking what each of us can do to embrace and take responsibility for our own life, work, health and ageing process.I am the author of Ageing Upwards. A mindfulness-based framework to the longevity revolution, published by Practical Inspirational Publishing in the UK in April 2023. In the book, I challenge society´s negative narrative story about ageing. Instead of being all down-hill, it can be a positive period of transition in life and a catalyst for growth. It is based on research I conducted in cooperation with Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) and Leyden Academy of Vitality and Ageing in the Netherlands. I hold a MSc in Health, Ageing and Society, a BA (Honours) in Psychology, and a MA in Communication. I am an experienced and accredited MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) Teacher, trained in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and also trained to teach .B Foundations for teachers at Mindfulness in Schools Foundations (MiSP).
