Tom Canavan Printing and Stationery Brokers was the first of its kind in Brisbane in 1978 . After spending sometime in the Insurance industry where brokerage was well developed Tom saw an opportunity to work for his loyal clients and achieve the best price possible and deliver quality printing on time. I joined him after his first heart attack via the kindness of my previous employer Banksia Scientific I was able work both jobs for six months which made the transition as smooth as possible . My time at TCPSB was great as many dont get to work directly with their Father . He was a charismatic fellow who could sell anything to anyone .Many lessons in life were learnt none the least of being alway make call in person and expose yourself to the chance of an order . I dare say something gleaned from the iconic salesman's tome How to win fiends and influence them by the redoubtable Dale Carnegie . Tom was also big on relationship building and building a rapport that went beyond business . Some of his clients where his closest friends. All in all it was a great experience to be taught early in my working career and a feature of my business now almost 30 years on.I reflect fondly of the greasy burgers we shared in Newstead park of a lunch time if we were on the road or his favourite crumbed whiting and chips at Gambaro's fish shop .
