My scientific focus is the metabolic engineering of the carbohydrate biosynthesis pathways in Escherichia coli in order to produce oligo- and polysaccharides of pharmaceutical interest. The general approach is to design bacterial cells modified at the genomic level and overexpressing recombinant genes to selectively create a new biosynthetic pathway related to the selective compound. Two important features we manage are (i) the incorporation of reactive chemical groups (such as allyl or propargyl groups) in the synthesis precursors before culture, and (ii) the high-density cell-cultures that allow obtaining gram scale of carbohydrates.
