About Bernard Bel

Bernard Bel is a computer scientist with a background in electronics. In 1979, he began working with musicologists and musicians on a scientific study of North Indian melodic and rhythmic systems. In 1981, he designed and built the first accurate real-time Melodic Movement Analyser (MMA) for the analysis of raga music, and implemented an expert system (Bol Processor BP1) for rule-based modelling of training methods in traditional Indian drumming. In 1986, he joined the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Marseille. He studied artificial intelligence with Alain Colmerauer and obtained a PhD in theoretical computer science in 1990.Between 1994 and 1998, Bel was deputed to the CENTRE DE SCIENCES HUMAINES (CSH, New Delhi).A new version of the Bol Processor (BP2), dedicated to generic music representation, won the first prize for computer composition software at the Bourges International Festival (1997). This software is now available as open source: https://bolprocessor.orgOne of the great features of the Bol Processor is its ability to process very complex time structures with a "polymetric" model that is fully accessible to human composers and designed at a level of abstraction that encompasses a wide variety of musical genres. The time model could easily be applied to other types of events/messages, such as the scheduling, sizing and precise timing of video clips, robot commands, etc.In 1998, Bel joined the LABORATOIRE PAROLE ET LANGAGE (CNRS, Aix-en-Provence). Together with colleagues, he created the Speech Prosody Special Interest Group (SproSIG) under the banner of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA).Bernard Bel created the Speech & Language Data Repository, a service for the sharing and long-term preservation of oral/linguistic resources, which later merged with the ORTOLANG project. Now retired from the CNRS, he is working on the Bol Processor project (https://bp3.tech) and on the management of a database of 110,000 grindmill songs collected in rural Maharashtra (India) with the support of the People's Archive of Rural India (PARI). He is also supporting non-profit organisations working to improve maternity services in France (https://ciane.net).Specialities: Computational musicologyMusical time modellingComputer programmingDatabase managementLong-Term Preservation of Digital Resources

Listed skills include Programming, Database Admin, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, and 20 others.
