Just finished a fast paced design-build project upgrading an existing urban freeway, SH 288. Added four toll lanes and FIFTY new bridges. Repaired forty older bridges. Built a new four level interchange at BW8. Replaced an existing one at I-610 South Loop. Brays Bayou has historically flooded SH 288 since the 1970's. During Hurricane Harvey the cut section was under 6' of water from Brays to 610. A dozen cars were lost, but it stored about 900 Acre-feet of water that would have swamped U of H and TSU. We added lots of detention ponds and worked on the three pump stations. The pace of the design and construction was dizzying. A million dollars of work was completed every day for months on end. I saw more construction work on this single four year project than in my previous 35 working years combined. It was an honor to work alongside great engineers and constructors from all over the world. Stantec, Dragados, Pulice, to name but a few. I am still working on SH 228 overseeing the Operations and Maintenance phase. Maintenance is a big challenge, it just never ends.
