Bernard Mackay, was born in Trinidad and educated in both Trinidad and the UK. After obtaining his Diploma in Architecture in 1972 from Thames Polytechnic, London, he remained in London for three years where he worked on renovations to a listed Nash Terrace in Regents Garden. Upon his return to Trinidad in 1975, he spent the first year with Reep Fojo and Holder Ltd. In 1978, he joined the practice of Gillespie & Steele Associates as Senior Architect. In 1980, he was made Partner with the said firm. This period saw the completion of several developments under his supervision. In 1986, Bernard established his own practice ‘Bernard Mackay Architect’. As Principal, he maintained an excellent working relationship with his repeat consultants that facilitated the completion of several significant projects under his supervision, such as; TT Post, Queen’s Royal College, President's House, UWI projects – Natural Sciences, Chemistry C1, School of Education Administration Building, Extension to Humanities Building, The Red House Restoration and many others.With an approaching 50th. anniversary in the construction industry, it is appropriate that a sustainable legacy be realised in a practice name change to The Mackay Practice.
