The Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) is the final body of appeal to which workers and employers may bring disputes concerning decisions of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). A Vice-Chair performs an adjudicative role, determining medical-legal disputes involving decisions of the WSIB over entitlement to benefits, health care and vocational rehabilitation. • Conduct hearings in-writing or orally (online or in-person), sitting as either a sole adjudicator or as part of a tripartite panel with worker and employer side-members• Manage caucus sessions with side-members in a manner conducive to achieving consensus-based decisions when sitting as part of a tripartite panel• Conduct each hearing in a manner consistent with the principles of judicial fairness and natural justice, and with sensitivity for the needs of both worker and employer stakeholders• Draft and issue a written decision that dispose of the legal and medical issues under appeal after the completion of the hearing process

The Osgoode Mediation Clinic (OMC) is an intensive clinical program open by application to 2nd and 3rd year law students. Students receive in-depth mediation training in the Fall term and then apply that training in year-long clinical placements. In the Winter term, the focus turns to mediation advocacy. Students participate in role plays and exercises and are required to submit an independent research paper at the end of the year on a topic of their choice that explores the theory and practice of mediation. Dispute resolution is finally being given the profile it deserves in law school curricula across Canada and throughout the world, and for good reason. A recent study published in the State of the Legal Market report published by Thomson Reuters Australia indicates that dispute resolution matters take up 22% of a lawyer’s time, highlighting the rising interest for knowledge and training in the field of ADR. Dispute resolution skills are life skills that can be applied in any human interaction. The Complaints Resolution Commissioner plays a vital role in the Law Society of Ontario's complaints resolution process, one similar to an ombudsman. The Commissioner independently reviews complaints against lawyers and paralegals that have been closed by the Law Society to ensure they were handled appropriately and the results were reasonable. This important function is independent of the Law Society professional regulation activities. Unlike a typical ombudsman, the Commissioner also has the authority to provide alternative dispute resolution services between lawyers or paralegals and their clients for issues that do not require a regulatory response.
