I have been employed as an addiction counselor for over 26 years. During that period I have worked in the private sector as the executive director of an out-patient program that served adult patients who were on parole or probation from state and federal institutions. Additionally, I worked as an assistant director of a federal halfway house in downtown Houston, and as a director of an addiction program at the Reid Center one of the largest state halfway houses in the United States. Presently, I have been working for fourteen years at the Menninger Clinic, a psychiatric hospital that handles co-occurring disorder patients. Menninger has been variously proclaimed as one of the best psychiatric hospitals in the United States. We are currently rated as number three by the U. S. News and World Reports Magazine. At Menninger my position affords me the opportunity to work with the more severely ill patients. Among my accomplishments here at Menninger, I regularly teach nursing students from eight different colleges about street drugs and the history of medications. Additionally, I do similar classes at Baylor College of Medicine with students of psychiatry. I consider myself to be an excellent speaker and have presented at conferences in several states. I am presently writing a 12 step workbook for co-occurring patients that include some of the latest information on the neuroscience of addiction.
