Profile bio

About Bert Meertens

As a PhD agronomist I have 25 years of experience with rural development in Africa (and a bit in the Caribbean). At the start of this period I was mainly engaged in participatory, adaptive, agricultural research on farmers’ fields and in extension related activities. Later on I also got experience with facilitating multi-stakeholder processes, with capacity building for efficient agricultural services, especially research and extension, with reviewing the agronomic aspects of several large-scale, private rice farms, with a mid-term evaluation of a cotton value chain project and with a large scale rice producer survey. More recently I was mainly involved in project coordination and other management functions. In my latest long-term assignment for the GIZ Green Innovation Center in Cameroon I coordinated the technical aspects of the cocoa, poultry and Irish potato value chains. During this assignment I got experience with Farmer Business School (FBS), Cooperative Business School (CBS) and SME-Loop.Key qualifications: Participatory methods (PTD, PRA, FFS), Agricultural Research and Extension, Project Management (formulation, planning, coordination, evaluation), Rice/Cotton/Maize/Cocoa/Irish Potato Value Chains, Integrated Soil Fertility Management, Capacity Building, Multi-Stakeholder Processes, Mechanization, Household surveys, Business Development (FBS, CBS, SME-Loop).

Listed skills include Capacity Building, Planning, Coordination, Rural Development, and 30 others.
