I also sits on the Expert Review Committee (ERC; representing ASC) of the World Benchmarking Alliance's Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI) which has just launched its first report -- first of its kind global benchmark ranking the Top 30 seafood companies on their UN SDG impact -- at the Our Oceans conference in Oslo in October 2019 (https://seafood.worldbenchmarkingalliance.org/).The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, international non-profit organisation that manages the world's leading certification and labelling programme for responsible aquaculture. The regularly reviewed ASC standards have been developed in line with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Guidelines and the programme is the only aquaculture certification scheme to be recognised as a full member of the ISEAL Alliance (other ISEAL members include the Marine Stewardship Council [MSC], Alliance for Water Stewardship, Fair Trade, The Forestry Stewardship Council...). The ASC also uses the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Assessing the Impacts of Social and Environmental Standards to demonstrate the ongoing validity of its work. Show less

All articles in the News Database were multi-indexed & fully searchable, using hundreds of keywords (by species, industry sectors, themes, countries, etc.). Whilst much of the news was about consumer, marketing, politics, production & food security trends & regulatory/legal issues… the overall focus was on ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable’/’responsible’ seafood.Seafood Intelligence strived to help filling the 'knowledge gap' and to enable access to reliable, objective, and up-to-date information (while highlighting differences of opinions) re. the global aquaculture & fisheries industries, and sustainable seafood trends. Sustainability, CSR & Accountability…. By focusing on transparency, companies responsible for the exploitation of a significant proportion of the world’s fisheries (and/but also terrestrial [re. farmed fish’s Feed]) resources - with the potential social, economic & environmental impacts this entails - can demonstrate to their stakeholders and society at-large, that they care about ‘sustainability’ and are continuously striving to improve and mitigate negative impacts; and can be thus ‘trusted’ to do so. To avoid accusations of greenwashing, stated ‘sustainability’ intentions and claims only become credible if they are backed by measurable deeds and by proactively providing transparent access to monitoring data. Transparency is an essential driver to the seafood industry’s social license to operate. This is why I also set up a project which ran for 7 years: ‘Benchmarking Global Seafood (Top 100) & Farmed Salmon (Top 35) industry's Transparency performance’. It is my strong belief that Sustainability Reporting is an integral part of ‘Sustainability’… Notably, by focusing on transparency, seafood corporations (incl. aquaculture, fisheries, feed, traders) can/should demonstrate to their stakeholders & society at-large that they ‘care’ about ‘sustainability’, and – precisely - ‘how’ they are striving to improve and mitigate negative impacts... to become ‘trusted’. To avoid green/blue-washing allegations, corporate players ‘sustainability’ claims only become credible if they are backed by #metric/#KPI-based reporting... and preferably 3rd-party audited. Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) and Transparency are thus not only needed to progress on the 'Sustainability' journey; but are also an essential driver for industry acceptance and its social license to operate (SLO). In order to precisely monitor & evaluate, and comparatively benchmark/rate corporate players’ respective performances, I developed over the course of 8 years a 100+ KPI-based Transparency M&E methodology aimed at: a) world’s Top 35 Salmon firms and main Feed companies [2010-2017]; b) world’s Top 100 seafood firms [2015-2017].Being the only comprehensive annual benchmark of the global salmon farming & seafood industry’s transparency, the voluminous Seafood Intelligence reports became an industry reference and encouraged many corporations to learn from their best performing peers to improve their Sustainability Policies. Reports provided much sustainability performance data; and insightful ‘Sustainability Conversations’ with C-suite execs & other key stakeholders. (Testimonials: http://www.seafoodintell.com/?page_id=18).Metric & traffic light colour-coded multi-indexed results, allowed many ('000s) comparisons across firms/regions/sectors. In the last [2017] edition, only 9/35 salmon farming & 5/11 feed companies [& 2/16 salmon industry organisations in 2016] performed ‘very well’… Much work thus still lies ahead!#Top35salmon, #Top100Seafood Show less
