This internship focused on technico-economic studies supporting the “Hydroelectric conversion investment modelling” (CAPEX), developing costs models for each flexible technology demonstrated by the project. XFLEX HYDRO: Launched during the United Nations climate change conference, is a 4 year initiative led by a consortium of 19 members (leading utilities, equipment manufacturers, universities, research centres and consultancies).This major project will play an important role in helping the EU reach its target of producing 32% of its energy from renewable resources by 2030, by demonstrating how innovative hydropower technologies can ensure the safety and flexibility of the power system (providing the vital power grid services required by variable renewables such as wind and solar power)The XFLEX HYDRO technologies to be tested are enhanced variable & fixed-speed turbine systems, smart controls and a battery-turbine hybrid, each of which will be demonstrated at hydropower plant sites across Europe: Z’Mutt in Switzerland, Grand Maison and Vogelgrün in France, and Frades 2, Alqueva, Alto Lindoso and Caniçada in Portugal.SuperGrid Institute will be working on defining the economic and socio-environmental benefits of flexible technologies.

The experience acquired was related to SK Industrial S.A. construction services for heavy industry (Oil, Energy, Mining, Steel, Cellulose, Paper…etc), including plant or equipments maintenance, upgrades, improvements and replacements.

SK Industrial S.A. executed expansion works at CMPC Mininco Plywood Plant by installing a second production line. The project involved 1.000.000 man-hour of civil works, steel structures, piping lines and electro-mechanical assemblies, testing and commissioning of heavy equipments from Raute Oyj, Grenzebach, and other foreign machinery brands.My duties and responsibilities consisted of preparing reports and specific analysis or registries for the administration, technical office and planning department, related to construction goals and progress of overall project. This experience increased my knowledge related to construction field and improved my written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, consequence of my constant participation in meetings and interaction with managers, workers and foreign brand vendors-technicians.

My capstone project was a successful integration of academic knowledge with applied industry, having as a result my engineering degree. I proposed, designed and performed a study of mechanical operations and maintenance of ski lifts. The project included: Loads calculation & analysis, national & international standards analysis in three languages, results integration, maintenance management and developing of recommendations, technical criteria and procedures.
