Historian, Heritage Education ServicesNational Park Service May 2005 - Dec 2013For the Heritage Education Services office, I developed and carried out policies to coordinate and promote NPS cultural resources education offerings. I also managed the Teaching with Historic Places program. During my tenure, this program created 150 standards-based classroom lessons and posted them online; offered professional development for educators, preservationists, and public historians; helped coordinate and promote a series of Youth Summits; and won numerous awards. I spoke at professional conferences and conducted dozens of workshops on historic preservation and heritage education topics. Over the course of my preservation career, my articles appeared in Magazine of History, Preservation Forum, The Public Historian, The Federalist, Interpretation, Vineyard, CRM, and National History Day "theme books." -
Program Manager, Teaching With Historic Places (Twhp)National Park Service Mar 1991 - Dec 2013Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses places listed in the National Register of Historic Places to enrich traditional instruction of American history, social studies, civics, geography, and other academic subjects. The cornerstone of this award-winning program is a series of more than 150 classroom-ready, online lesson plans used primarily in grades 4--12. These lessons are based on real historic places and engage students in active learning through analysis of readings; maps; a variety of visual images; and other documents, including primary sources; and through synthesizing activities and service learning projects. The lessons are indexed by state, theme, time period, learning skill, and the national history and social studies standards. TwHP also offers other publications, workshops, and online resources. The TwHP website contains an extensive professional development section, "Teaching Teachers the Power of Place," which includes articles, course materials, videos, PowerPoint presentations, workshop agendas, lists of helpful resources, and more. -
