Education Technician
CurrentResearch, adapt, develop and present outdoor curriculum-based educational programs for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park "Parks as Classrooms" program. Provide lessons in history, science, Cherokee heritage, and conservation practices for a variety of ages (K-12) in outdoor and classroom settings. Insure that programs are thematic, emphasize tangible and non-tangible resources of park, and incorporate universal concepts appropriate to age of audience. (Examples of programs: Phenology, Soil Science, Aquatic and Terrestrial Macro-Invertebrates, Salamander and Snail Monitoring, Cherokee Pottery, Archaic to Woodland Indian Technology, Archaeology, Mountain Life, The CCC, Interdependence and Weather, Plant and Animal Adaptations, Bio-diversity & Taxonomy). Create special programming for Junior Rangers, Citizen Science, History Day, and others. Coordinate & conduct teacher workshops and volunteer training. Supervise & mentor Americorps interns & seasonal rangers including scheduling, training, evaluation and goal setting. Create and update visual and other cognitive aids utilizing a variety of software (InDesign, PowerPoint, Word, Photoshop) with park library and archives, museum collections, local resources and the internet. Create printed and digital documents, graphics, promotional videos, databases and worksheets. Insure safety in a variety of hazardous conditions, make adjustments to programs based on changes to natural environment; work out logistical details with other educators and teachers, and comply with park operating procedures. Inventory, order, maintain and organize equipment and props in education and borrowed from museum collections. Perform visitor center front desk duties, including building opening and closing, answering visitor questions, updating road and weather hotlines, working events, and maintaining exhibits.
