Chief Executive

National

In an increasingly urbanised country, Britain's beautiful woodlands are under threat. In fact, Britain has one of the lowest percentages of native tree cover in Europe. Gradually, we are undoing this destruction and planting and nurturing a new, native tree forest in the heart of England, to create a space for wildlife to thrive and for people to reconnect with nature and learn about the great outdoors. As the Chief Executive, I am very proud to be leading a team of staff and volunteers on the largest woodland creation scheme in the country. Acting as the lung of the West Midlands, we have already planted over 2 million native broadleaf trees across almost 8,000 acres - a mosaic of habitat from newly planted Forest to mature and ancient woodland, flower-rich grasslands, a network of wetland, and a patchwork of heathland. However, this is just the start. Our long term objective is to create 30,000 acres of contiguous woodland habitat, making the Heart of England Forest a lasting legacy for the people of Britain. In a very diverse role I am responsible for the strategic development and operational leadership of the charity; from our tree planting and woodland management planning, to our farming and agroforestry, and from brand development, working with corporate and other funding partners and engaging the public to leading our groundbreaking learning programme and managing the trading arms of the charity - our marinas, woodland burial site, holiday cottages and caravan park to our farming and agroforestry work - which help us to secure the income required to realise our vision.I have developed the charity over a period of 7,5 years, growing it to a team of over 80, and encouraging and supporting the development of our volunteer programme, which led to the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2022, recognising the incredible work our volunteers undertake across the charity.

I am passionate about the impact which work based learning can have on individuals and organisations in their local context and the wider economy. I work with a national team of staff to promote the value of high quality work experience in all its guises. As the Awarding Body for the national Work Experience Quality Standard accreditation, Fair Train encourages all employers - across the public, private and voluntary sectors - to use the accreditation system as a framework to develop high quality work experience within their own organisations. Fair Train also promotes the national Work Experience Week in October.
